We are starting our city tours with amazing Sultanahmet, Hagia Sophia and Basilica Cistern! Many of Istanbul's historical gems are in Sultanahmet district, within a wonderful square where many of the important landmarks of the city are located. We will take a close look at the Byzantine and Ottoman culture while discovering the old Istanbul.
We will visit the impressive Sultanahmet aka Blue Mosque, the only mosque that was originally built with six minarets. Later, we will visit the stunning Hagia Sophia, a church that became a mosque in the 15th century when the Ottomans conquered the city. And then the Basilica Cistern, the largest ancient cistern built to provide water to the city in the cases of siege.
During this fascinating trip, we will have lunch.
We are going to meet at the gate of South Campus on June 23rd, at 11:00. If desired, you can join us at Sultanahmet Square at 11:30.
Important Note: There is no participation fee, but have your student IDs and some cash with you for lunch and to get a museum card, which will be very convenient to enter many historic places throughout Turkey. We will wait for you to get your cards at Sultanahmet!
Hope to see you all there!
