Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the national hero of Turkey, is the founder of the Republic of Turkey.

As 4 sections - ESN Bogazici, ESN YILDIZ, ESN Yeditepe, ESN Bahcesehir- we will visit Anıtkabir, Ankara in order to commemorate him.

Atatürk was born in 1881 in Salonika (now Thessaloniki), then part of the Ottoman Empire. He had a long and active military career before entering politics. He was a visionary and revolutionary leader who swiftly modernized Turkey after becoming its first president from 1923 until his death in 1938. In 1935, when surnames were introduced in Turkey, he was given the name Atatürk, meaning 'Father of the Turks'. He died on November 10, 1938, aged 57 years old. He remains a revered figure in Turkey and his legacy is seen throughout Turkish life today.

Anıtkabir, which means the memorial tomb, is the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Anıtkabir is also the final resting place of İsmet İnönü, the second President of Turkey. His tomb faces the Atatürk Mausoleum, on the opposite side of the Ceremonial Ground. The four main parts of Anıtkabir are the Road of Lions, the Ceremonial Plaza, the Hall of Honor (location of Atatürk's tomb) and the Peace Park that surrounds the monument. Within the Anıtkabir site there are also towers and statues. Atatürk's wardrobe, some of the gifts presented to him, and his personal items like many photographs about him and his valuable family are on display in the glorious Atatürk Museum located on Anıtkabir. Besides, there is found a special library of him, with more than 3000 books.
